1977 CUBS TRACK TEAM TO BE HONORED AT BLUEBONNET RELAYS

 

The State Champion Brenham Cub Men’s track team from 1977 will be recognized Thursday, at Cub stadium, at the Bluebonnet Relays.

This team placed 5th in 1976 at State, and was leading the mile relay until the last 15 yards, when future Olympian, Johnny Jones made up a 30-yard deficit, and passed Brenham’s anchor leg, Michael Brown. The mile relay team placed 2nd in state that year.

In 1977, going into the State meet, had a potential to score 40 points. Chris Duhon won the pole vault, scoring 10 points. Suffering with the flu, Marcus Martin wins the 880-yard run for another 10 points.

The mile relay, which consisted of Jeff Appel, David Bradford, Marcus Martin, and Michael Brown win state with a 3A record that still stands today, in a time of 3:13.7, which converts to 3:12.58 for the shorter 1600 meter relay.

The 76- and 77-mile relay teams had a combined record of 30 wins and only two 2nd places during those 2 seasons. During the 1977 season, the team broke or tied 15 school records.

Five members of the team received track scholarships to 4-year colleges or junior colleges.  Six members of the team were invited and participated with the “Texas All Stars”, which participated in an international meet in Mexico City.

Also to be honored Thursday, will be 1977 team member Jeff Appel and 2009 Cubette standout Chantel Bratton.

The honorees will be recognized, right after the 100 meter dash, Thursday.
