IMPACT OF AGRICULTURE RECOGNIZED DURING NATIONAL AGRICULTURE WEEK

This week is National Agriculture Week, and farmers and ranchers around the country are being recognized for their contributions.

The importance of agriculture is difficult to understate, especially in Washington County, where many make their livelihood in the field.

Allyson James, Washington County’s Extension Agent for 4-H and Youth Development, says because agriculture is such a large economic driver – particularly in Texas – it is crucial to teach the significance of it at a young age.

James says Texas 4-H has widened its scope as agriculture continues to grow, branching into different areas and connecting them to the agriculture industry.

James says local youth have recently been showing and judging livestock at several major shows across the state, including in Austin, Houston, San Angelo and San Antonio.

Several resources are available for anyone interested in learning more about agriculture, including https://washington.agrilife.org and https://texas4-h.tamu.edu.

All this week, KWHI is airing “4-H Beef Salutes” in celebration of National Agriculture Week, featuring members of Washington County 4-H clubs as they discuss the beef and cattle industry.  The programs air during KWHI’s noon and evening newscasts through tomorrow (Friday), and are sponsored by Cattleman’s Brenham Livestock Auction; Chappell Hill Bakery, Deli and BBQ; Citizens State Bank; K&M Grocery; Kohring Monument Company; Oak Creek Farms; Sandy Creek Ranch; Schovajsa Catering; Texas Farm Credit; and WC Tractor.
