WASHINGTON COUNTY 4-HER MORAN GOES ON TRIP OF A LIFETIME

  

Washington County 4-Her Madison Moran recently had the trip of a lifetime after being chosen as one of 30 young people in the state of Texas for a trip to Hawaii.

Moran became a certified Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassador three years ago, and attended an agriculture advocacy program at the State Capitol last Summer. This year, she applied for another leg of the Texas Youth Livestock and Agriculture Program.

The TYLA strives to provide high school aged 4-H members with the opportunity to develop and practice advanced leadership skills related to mentoring other youth, and to become advocates for animal agriculture.

The 11-day adventure took Moran and the other students to the Big Island of Hawaii along with Maui, O’ahu, and Kauai. The ag experience included so many opportunities to delve into the variety of Hawaiian agriculture.

The trip included a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, along with volcanoes, waterfalls, beaches, beautiful vegetation, and an authentic Hawaii Luau.

This experience to multiple Hawaiian islands touched on agriculture in a plethora of environments and categories including cattle production, wildlife, shrimp, and other seafood farming, floral and nursery production and cocoa, chocolate, coffee, macademia nut, and orchard farming.

The TYLA is led by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service out of College Station and supported by key agricultural entities all over the state.
