A Fayetteville man was arrested early this (Friday) morning after two citizens helped Sheriff’s Deputies take him into custody.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reported that his office received a call during the early morning hours regarding a suspect trespassing on property near the Fayetteville area.

The caller said that a male subject had been looking around their vehicle before going inside a building on the property and coming back out.

A resident with a firearm confronted the subject and ordered him to the ground at gunpoint, detaining him until law enforcement arrived.

Sheriff’s Deputy Chase Cedar made the scene and attempted to secure the subject, 47-year-old Brian Schmitt of Fayetteville, in handcuffs.

Schmitt began resisting and a struggle ensued.  The two citizens helped Deputy Cedar to restrain the subject, and take him into custody.

Sgt. Ryan Meagher arrive on the scene to assist as well.

Schmitt was arrested on charges of Burglary of a Building and Resisting Arrest.  He was then transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center in LaGrange, and released into the custody of jail staff.

Sheriff Korenek’s office released a statement saying that they would like to commend the citizens involved for their quick thinking, willingness to act, and assistance of Deputy Cedar.
