WASHINGTON CO. FAIR KICKING OFF 157TH YEAR

The oldest county fair in Texas has officially begun.

The 157th Washington County Fair runs through next Saturday, September 20th at the Washington County Expo.

Today’s (Friday) events include the Future Legends Youth Rodeo Finals at 6 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by a pitch tournament and the opening of the barbecue cook-off.  Tomorrow (Saturday) will open at 8 a.m. with a trail ride, the parade through downtown Brenham at 10:30 a.m., the presentation of cook-off awards at 4:30 p.m., and the crowning of the fair queen at 6 p.m.

Fair President Ricky Bosse, Vice President Cabin Warmke and Assistant Fair Manager Madalynn Kainer appeared on this week’s edition of the KWHI Community Corner to talk about the fair.  The three say they look forward each year to the return of the fair, as it gives local youth the chance to showcase their hard work, while also letting the public support them as they pursue their future.

The theme for the fair parade is “Timeless Traditions”.  The Grand Marshals are Erwin and Kay Sander.  Parade staging in the downtown area will occur along Main Street, Market Street and Ross Street.  Roads will be blocked between 8 a.m. and noon.

Also on tomorrow’s schedule will be a washer tournament at 11 a.m., a bean bag tournament at 1:30 p.m., a car and truck show at 2 p.m., the ranch rodeo at 7:30 p.m., and music from the Texas Unlimited Band at 8 p.m.

A Cowboy Church service will start Sunday’s events at 8:30 a.m., with a bucket calf show at 1 p.m. and the ag mechanics contest at 4 p.m.  New this year on Monday, a public speaking contest will be held at 5 p.m.  Tuesday will have county team roping at 7:15 p.m., as well as the opening of the Heart of America Carnival.

Wednesday gets livestock judging events rolling, and they will occur throughout the day.  The evening will feature the crowning of the Little and Junior Mister and Miss starting at 6 p.m.  Commercial judging will be held on Thursday, along with the Champion Drive at 9:30 a.m.

Friday’s main event will be the Junior Livestock Auction at 1 p.m.  Saturday will round out with the country creations superior sale at 10 a.m., commercial steer sale at 1 p.m., and the junior colt sale and junior commercial heifer auction at 2 p.m.  Saturday’s activities will also include a livestock judging contest at 8 a.m., little wrangler hay hauling at 9 a.m., a pet show at 10 a.m., and youth hay hauling and the greased pig contest at 6 p.m.

Throughout the week, the fairgrounds will play host to rodeo and mutton bustin’ events, as well as a petting zoo, antique tractor displays, a country store, commercial exhibits, and special performances from “Twiggy the Water-Skiing Squirrel”.

Next week’s musical entertainment will feature Grupo Zenzio at 8 p.m. and Secretto at 10 p.m. on Wednesday.  Thursday, it will be Tyler Halverson at 8 p.m. and Ty Myers at 10 p.m.  Friday will host the Cameron Sacky Band at 8:30 p.m. and Randall King at 10:30 p.m.  Saturday will bring in headliners Glen Templeton at 8:30 p.m. and Gary Allan at 10:30 p.m.

Season passes for the fair are available through noon tomorrow from any of the three fair queen candidates: Amirah Byrd, Haileigh Lange and Maddie Brumbelow.  More details on the fair, including a full schedule, can be seen at www.washingtoncofair.com.

KWHI and KTEX-106 will have live coverage throughout the fair, including at tomorrow’s parade and queen’s crowning.  KWHI will also carry Washington County Fair reports during the morning, noon and evening newscasts, offering daily updates on livestock judging results and other events.

The two stations also invite fairgoers to come by and spin the Wagon Wheel of Prizes from Wednesday to Saturday.  This year, spins of the wheel will raise funds for Gather ‘n Grace and its Monday Family Dinner program.
