The City of Brenham and the Brenham Fire Department achieved a long-awaited milestone today (Friday) with the opening of a second fire station.
A large crowd gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the official opening of the station, located at 3007 James Nutt Boulevard, welcoming it into service. The approximately 10,000-square-foot facility features three apparatus bays, living quarters for personnel, an exercise room, a training classroom and associated support spaces.
Mayor Atwood Kenjura called this “a special and important day for the City of Brenham”, saying firefighters deserve the best facilities and equipment that the city can provide for them to perform the job they do.

Retired City Manager Carolyn Miller, who led a large portion of the city’s planning for the station, said it has been a long time in the making and represents an investment into the city’s future. She said it is important to have this facility as the city serves a growing population.

According to Miller, the city now has 27 paid firefighters, nine per shift. Five will staff the station on Chappell Hill Street, and four will staff the new station, though there is room for eight firefighters at the new facility.
Fire Chief Mark Donovan said the station will be a tool to help the fire department better protect citizens. He thanked city leaders for believing in the importance of public safety and all those who contributed toward the project and made it a reality.
After comments from officials, clergy blessed the fire station and the department’s fire trucks. The flag was then raised outside the station for the first time, followed by the ribbon cutting. After that, visitors enjoyed lunch and cake while checking out the station and fire trucks.
KWHI and KTEX-106 were invited on a tour of the new station on Thursday. Photos from the tour and today's ribbon cutting can be seen below, and a video can be seen here.
