WASHINGTON COUNTY, COLLEGE STATION FIRE CREWS STOP LIQUID ASPHALT SPILL FROM ENTERING CREEK

  

Multiple agencies spent several hours on Wednesday working to stop a liquid asphalt spill southwest of Brenham.

Brenham Fire Chief Mark Donovan gave a report today (Thursday) to city councilmembers detailing the incident, which had first responders enroute around 7:45 a.m. to an overturned 18-wheeler carrying 6,000 gallons of liquid asphalt at Dogwood Road and Adamek Road, near FM 389.  Donovan said approximately 700 – 1,000 gallons had spilled and were making their way towards a creek, and there was also a diesel spill due to a ruptured saddle tank.  

Responding were the Brenham Fire Department and Latium and Berlin Volunteer Fire Departments, along with Brenham and College Station HAZMAT.  The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County EMS, Washington County Road and Bridge, and Texas Department of Public Safety also assisted.  According to Donovan, crews had to drill the tank and offload the product into another truck in order to mitigate the leak.

Donovan credited Brenham Fire Department Assistant Chief David Cella and Tim Hamff, part of the Brenham/Washington County HAZMAT assessment team, for coordinating the response with Washington County 911 and College Station HAZMAT.  He thanked all agencies for their quick work amid dangerous conditions.

Units cleared the scene at approximately 2:30 p.m.  According to Donovan, it is believed that the spill occurred after the 18-wheeler took a corner too sharply.
