WASHINGTON CO. PROPERTY TAX BILLS GOING OUT

Property tax statements are being sent out to Washington County property owners.

Washington County Chief Appraiser Dyann White says the average bill for homeowners, depending on the taxing district, is going up between 3 – 13 percent.

Property tax rate increases were passed this fall by the county, the Cities of Brenham and Burton, and Blinn College, while Brenham ISD and Burton ISD reduced their tax rates.

While certified property values still grew in most areas, White says the level at which they did so was less steep than in recent years.

White expects next year’s legislative session to include discussion on further increasing homestead exemption amounts, lowering how much taxable values can increase year over year, limiting how often property appraisals can occur, and requiring fewer voter signatures on petitions to roll back tax rates, though she says it ultimately will depend on the outcome of the November elections.

White says her office handled roughly 5 – 8 percent fewer property value protests this year in comparison to last.  She reminds property owners to take advantage of the discounted tax payments of 3, 2 and 1 percent offered for paying in October, November and December, respectively.
