FIVE WASHINGTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SITES TO BE OPEN FOR TOURING THIS FALL

This fall will be the time to explore Washington County’s colorful heritage by experiencing the grand opening of Step into the Past Historical Tours, five historical sites in Brenham who are scheduled to open their doors for public tours this fall.

“Brenham has fascinating places that have never been opened to the public,” said Doug Price, director of the Brenham Heritage Museum. “The new attractions will be promoted as a package with existing historical attractions to enrich the experience for visitors to our community.”

“About 8,000 walk-in tourist have visited the Washington County Visitor Center each year since 2012,” says Page Michel, president/CEO of the Washington County Chamber Convention and Visitors Bureau.” “Most are looking for things to do in the area. With the new Step into the Past package, we can offer a variety of unique attractions that appeal to both adults and children.”

The venues being opened are already toured each May be the student of Brenham ISD during their annual Local History Day.

These tours will be self- guided, and include the following:

Glissman Drug Store Museum, which retains its 1924 look.

Brenham Fire Museum, where visitors can see up-close three antique fire trucks

Brenham Heritage Museum, which features new displays and collections, and interactive activities for children.

Toubin Park, which was opened in 2011, and features an original cistern built around 1878.

The Giddings Wilkin House Museum, which is the oldest standing home in Brenham, built in 1843.

The Barnhill Center at the Simon Theatre, which was opened in 1925, and has recently been renovated, and will have a grand opening this fall.

The Giddings-Stone Mansion, which was built in 1870, continues to host many events, as it has for 150 years.

The project is being planned by volunteer Sharon Brass, Jennifer Eckermann of Main Street, Brenham, Doug Price and Cynthia Eben of the Brenham Heritage Museum, and Page Michel, Lu Hollander and Jenny Mils, of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitor Bureau.

There is still a need for more volunteers to staff these venues on Saturday, says Jennifer Eckermann, of Main Street Brenham.
