CALDWELL MAN ARRESTED IN BRAZOS CO. SHOOTING DEATH
A Caldwell man is in the Brazos County Jail, charged in the shooting death of a man in Brazos County.
50-year old Rod Clanton of Caldwell is in custody, charged with Aggravated Assault of a Family Member with a Deadly Weapon.
Clanton is accused of shooting and killing his stepbrother, 54-year old Stephen Craig Bishop of Bogata, Texas.
Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk says the shooting occurred shortly after 6:00 Monday night near the intersection of OSR and Highway 21 in Bryan.
According to the sheriff, the Clanton and Bishop met at the intersection following an argument. According to Kirk, that argument was over threats Clanton made to Bishop’s nephew over money the nephew had borrowed from Clanton.
According to a Sheriff’s Department news release, Clanton and Bishop resumed their argument while both were seated in their parked vehicles.
Clanton told investigators when he saw Bishop display a handgun, he grabbed his handgun.
Clanton said he pointed his gun at Bishop, but claims he does not remember firing his gun.
A .357 Magnum revolver was recovered from of Clanton’s truck.
Investigators found Bishop with a single gunshot wound to his head. A loaded semi-automatic pistol was found in Bishop’s lap. Kirk says the gun had not been fired.
Bishop’s body was taken to Austin for an autopsy at the Travis County medical examiners office.
