Three people were killed and two others severely burned in a Tuesday evening wreck on I-10 in Fayette County.

Units were called out around 7:30 p.m. to a reported 18-wheeler trailer fire near the intersection of I-10 and Highway 90, east of Schulenburg.  According to a DPS report, an H-E-B trailer was hauling groceries in the westbound lanes, when the passenger side of the trailer axle caught fire.

While authorities were tending to the fire, about an hour later, another 18-wheeler hit the last vehicle in the line of traffic resulting from the fire.  That vehicle, a pickup, went airborne and ejected the two people that were inside.  The 18-wheeler also hit a separate semi parked in front of the pickup.  Both of the 18-wheelers burst into flames.

The deceased were identified as Ricardo Palomo of Weslaco, Derek Martinez of San Antonio, and Nathan Ramirez.

The two burn victims, identified as Oliver Stokes and Shawn Wilson, both of San Antonio, were taken by helicopter to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in critical condition.

DPS troopers worked the scene, with assistance from several area EMS and volunteer fire departments.

  2. “That vehicle, a pickup, went airborne and ejected the two people that were inside.” Please everyone, wear your seatbelts, they do save lives! I know the article does not say they were not, but most ejections are the result of vehicle occupants not wearing seatbelts. Praying for these families.
