CUBS SURVIVE AND ADVANCE TO REGION SEMIFINALS
It took extra innings, but the Brenham Cubs are headed to the Region III/4A Semifinals.
The Cubs outlasted Kingwood Park, 7-4 in 10 innings Saturday afternoon at Tomball High School, to advance to the semifinals against Friendswood.
Brenham (25-9) took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but a one out solo home run by the Panthers’ David Falkner sent the game into extra innings.
Kingwood Park (25-13) had rallied from a 4-1 Cubs’ lead, after Teddy Hoffman’s three-run homer in the third inning.
In the top of the tenth, Tyler Watts led off with a walk. He stole second and was sacrificed over to third by Sam McElreath. Jacob Stegent then drove Watts home with an rbi-single.
The Cubs added to their one-run lead when an error on a high hopper by Caleb Hill scored Stegent. Hoffman, who’d been hit by a pitch, scored on a two-out single by Rayne Richard.
After two Panthers reached in the bottom of the tenth, Hoffman got a two-out ground ball to short to force the runner at second and end the game.
Hoffman (2-3) picked up the win in relief, going three-and-a-third innings scoreless innings.
Stegent got the start for the Cubs, going six-and-a-third innings before giving way to Hoffman.
The win advances the Cubs to the Region Semifinals where they’ll face Friendswood, who eliminated Santa Fe two-games-to-one, with a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon.
