A&M ANNOUNCES VET PARTNERSHIP

The Texas A&M System and A&M’s College of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences has announced a new partnership to provide more educational and economic opportunities for veterinary students.

The College Station campus will team up with West Texas A&M University, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Prairie View A&M and Tarleton State to diversify and expand the veterinary program.

A&M Chancellor John Sharp, President Michael Young, Dr. Eleanor Green, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at A&M, and representatives from each participating university made the announcement Thursday in Austin, after six years of discussion.

According to Sharp, the initiative was in response to a study conducted by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in 2009 that called for an increase in the number of underrepresented minorities entering the field and more rural-based large animal veterinarians in Texas.

He said each university in the partnership will provide resources, including research facilities and livestock and wildlife programs that can now be used by all faculty members and students through internships and clinicals.
