CUBS GET PAST EASTVIEW IN THREE

The Eastview Patriots would not go quietly into the off season as they forced the Brenham into a third game before the Cubs eventually moved on to the second round of the playoffs, 14-4.

After Friday’s perfect 10-0 Cubs win, the Patriots rallied to take game-two and send the series to a one-game winner-take-all match up.

In the opener, Saturday morning in Mumford, Eastview jumped out with three unearned runs off starting pitcher Eric Wellmann in the first inning.

Cub shortstop Connor Klussmann dives for a ground ball.

The score was 4-0 before the Cubs rallied for a run in the fifth on Davion Lockett’s groundball out that scored Hunte Avila.

Brenham made things interesting in the seventh, as pinch-hitter Jake Olson doubled home Avila to cut the lead to 4-2, but winning pitcher Aaron Parks got the last two outs to close out the Eastview win.

Cub catcher Pierce Weiss reaches to tag an Eastview runner at home.

The Cubs fell behind 3-0 in the third game as Eastview got a solo homer from Dalton Westbrook and rbi-singles from Mason Tyndall and Jonathan Ortegon.

Winning pitcher of the third game Evan Aschenbeck.

But freshman Evan Aschenbeck came in, in relief of starter Austin Derkowski and held the Patiots to just one more run over the next three-and-a-third innings.

The Cubs claimed the lead for good, with five runs in the bottom of the second inning, keyed by an rbi-single from Connor Klussmann and a two-run single from Darvis Watson.

The Cubs maintained their slim lead until the bottom of the fifth hen they added two runs on run-scoring hits from Chandler Jozwiak and Pierce Weiss.

Zach Marshall hit a Grand Slam to end the third game.

Brenham broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth inning.  The game ended on Marshall’s grand slam homer with two outs that gave the Cubs their 10-run cushion.

Brenham advances to the Area Round to face Whitehouse or Rudder.
