All is well in Texas as the 2014 high school football season has begun with the opening of two-a-days across the state.
In Brenham, the Cubs are coming off a 2013 season that saw the team advance to the 4A State Championship game for just the third time in school history.
The Cubs return seven starters (four on offense, three on defense) from that 14-2 team.
Included among the returners are record-setting running back Ernest Patterson who rushed for a single-season record 2,439 yards and scored a total of 28 touchdowns.
Also back is starting quarterback Caleb Hill, who threw for 2,523 yards and 25 touchdowns.
The Cubs also return All-District selections: LB, Tre’vonte Smith; OL, Dalton Nutt; DL, Alfondrick Bennett; QB/RB, Walter Thomas; and, K, Tien Pham.
The Cubs’ first scrimmage is set for Friday, August 15th, when they host Manvel.
The season opener is Friday night, August 29th at Houston Lamar at 7:00 on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
Tonight’s edition of the Brenham Sports Line will originate live from the Kruse Field House at Brenham High School with Coach Glen West and members of the Cubs. The program will begin at 5:35 on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
Meanwhile, just up Highway 290, the Burton Panthers are beginning work on their 2014 team.
The Panthers caught fire in the second half of the 2013 season, going a perfect 5-0 in district.
Among the key returning Panthers are Texas Longhorn commitment Louis Brown, starting quarterback Luke Huffer, and linebacker Brandon Salinas.
The Panthers’ first scrimmage is set for Friday, August 15th at Hempstead.
The Brenham Christian Academy Eagles have also opened their 2014 workouts.
The Eagles did not field a team in 2013, due to a low number of players.
They return to the field in 2014 with a new head coach in Rick Frey and three starters from the 2012 team in tow.
The Eagles open their season Friday night, August 29th at home to Summit Christian.
