City Manager Terry Roberts announced today that Capt. Dant Lange will be named interim police chief effective May 4 while the search and hiring process begins for a new chief. Roberts announced last week that Chief Rex Phelps will be moving into the position of assistant city manager over general fund operations. The move comes as a result of the retirement of longtime assistant city manager Kyle Dannhaus.

Lange, a native of Brenham, has been with the department over 20 years and in his current position of captain of the patrol division for the last three.  He and his wife Stacy have two sons and one daughter.

“I am very confident in Capt. Lange’s ability to maintain departmental stability through this interim period.  He has served in leadership positions in both patrol and CID. This experience will no doubt benefit him and the department in the coming months,” said Chief Rex Phelps.

Phelps will be working with the City’s Human Resources Department and City Manager to develop the informational package to be distributed to prospective candidates in an effort to recruit the strongest pool of candidates possible for the position of chief of police.

“The next chief will need to continue the departmental philosophy of servant leadership. He or she will be expected to have strong communication skills, strong values and principles and a reputation for building relationships both internally and externally,” City Manager Roberts remarked.

“The process for selection is still being developed and an extensive background investigation will be conducted on any potential final candidate. We want to ensure that we get the right person for the job because this department and this community deserve nothing less,” Phelps said.

The position vacancy will be posted shortly and advertised in several locations including the Texas Municipal League, the Texas Police Chief’s Association and other trade publications.
