BLINN OPENS THEATRE SEASON WITH ‘THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU’

  

Play will explore thought-provoking topics through on-stage performance and projection screens

The Blinn College-Brenham Campus Theatre Arts Program will open its 2018-19 season with “The Island of Dr. Moreau” at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center.

“The Island of Dr. Moreau” will open at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 11-13, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center (campus map). To purchase tickets, visit www.blinn.edu/boxoffice, email boxoffice@blinn.edu, or call 979-830-4024.

Tickets for all shows are $10 for adults and $5 for students, children, and senior citizens. The play does contain some graphic violence.

The first play in the Season of Tall and Twisted Tales, “The Island of Dr. Moreau” tells the story of mild-mannered Edward Prendick, who survives a shipwreck only to find himself on an island ruled by the disgraced Dr. Moreau. Ruthlessly pursuing what he believes to be God’s work, Moreau experiments on living creatures and fills his dystopia with a menagerie of tortured Beast Folk desperate to obey laws they cannot comprehend.

The play’s script is written by Robert Kauzlauric, based on a novel by H.G. Wells.

“This is different than any faculty showcase because it is very thought provoking,” said Brad Nies, Theatre Arts Director. “This is more than just a scary story because we want to make a point about not only the mistreatment of animals, but of humans as well.”

The faculty showcase will feature characters played by Nies and returning Blinn students.

“I will play Dr. Moreau, a character who looks at what he is doing as a progression of science and tries to desperately prove that he isn’t mad,” Nies said.

Part-time instructor and costume designer Jennifer Patrick will direct the play.

“I look forward to directing our students in a direction they have probably never been before because a lot of the characters in this play are half-human and half-animal,” Patrick said. “We have been studying animals to see how they move and behave, and it is a great way to get our students outside of their comfort zone.”

Kevin Patrick will serve as the technical director and will add full projections to the set.
