PUBLIC GIVES INPUT FOR BRENHAM’S FUTURE AT OPEN HOUSE

The Brenham community had a chance to provide feedback regarding an update to the city’s comprehensive and thoroughfare plans, at an open house meeting Thursday.

A moderately-sized crowd met at the Barnhill Center in downtown Brenham to talk with representatives of Kendig Keast Collaborative (KKC), a planning consultant out of Sugarland.

Guests participated in hands-on activities, like placing markers on maps where they would like to see growth and development, jotting down ideas on how to make public parks better, or showing where the city could use new sidewalks.

KKC Senior Associate Meredith Dang said the firm is wrapping up its existing conditions assessment of Brenham, and is now looking at the future of the city.  She presented economic and population information which was shown to city officials earlier on Thursday, and referenced data gathered from the town hall meeting held in January.

Dang said the firm is planning another town hall meeting in April, with a specific date to be determined soon.  She also said it will look to have drafts of the plans available by June, with the city council receiving the plans in August.

  1. The city engineer just needs to inforce the rules already on the books. I’m getting a new dry cleaners in my neighborhood. The new owner is converting a house into a dry cleaner business. The new parking lot will flood my neighbors house next door. The neighborhood deed restrictions do not even allow any businesses. Your new plan needs to include abiding by the existing regulations.

  2. One area where sidewalks are lacking is South Day Street from Tom Green Street to the four corners, Walmart area. The area gets a lot of foot traffic from employees walking to and from work. Many of their shifts end and begin before sunup and during the night.. many of these pedestrians are in their late teens and early 20s and wear dark clothing. Sometimes it Is Really difficult to see people that are forced to walk in the street especially during adverse weather conditions. This would be a great area to install sidewalks, it also needs improved lighting and a little landscaping would go a long ways to make this Corridor more attractive. It is the primary north-south connector And One of the primary routes to downtown. It need to make a better first impression

    1. Brenham Citizen, All of B-36 is controlled by TXDot The city can not do much of anything except request TXDot to install sidewalks. And then i am sure txDot would have to conduct some sort of study. I am fully agreeing with you as there are many people walking to work on the side of the street.
