BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO DISCUSS PARKS AND REC. TOBACCO RECOMMENDATIONS

The Brenham City Council will consider moving forward with changes to the city’s ordinance regarding tobacco at tomorrow’s (Thursday) meeting.

The council will look to amend the Health and Sanitation chapter of city ordinance, which pertains to the use of tobacco at city-owned facilities.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has recommended the council more clearly define park and playground areas as no smoking zones. It was also the consensus of the board that city parks not only be smoke free, but tobacco free.

Also in session, councilmembers will discuss an agreement for assistance through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Watershed Protection Program for Higgins Branch. The city submitted its request for assistance to the Natural Resources Conservation Service in October of 2017, for drainage ways throughout the city.

During Hurricane Harvey, creeks throughout the city were damaged. Higgins Branch from North of West Main Street to east of Burleson Street, Hog Branch through Jackson Street Park, and Little Sandy Creek through Hohlt Park have been approved for the Emergency Watershed Protection Program.  This agreement is specifically for Higgins Branch from West Main Street to east of Burleson Street, including Hattie Mae Park.

The project will remove and dispose of accumulated sediment by reestablishing flow lines, side slopes, and armor eroded areas. Once the agreement is executed, the city will have 220 days to complete the project.  The estimated project budget sits at $650,000.

The council will also hold a work session on a chapter of city ordinance dealing with flood damage prevention. According to City Engineer Lori Sanguedolce, FEMA recently completed a revision to the countywide Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report and Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for Washington County.

The City of Brenham was not affected by the updated flood hazard information in those reports, but it does lie on one or more of the revised map panels. It is necessary for the city to update the floodplain management ordinance, known as the Flood Damage Prevention ordinance, to reflect the new FIRM effective date of May 16th.

The council will then adjourn into executive session to discuss the possible purchase of property in the downtown area for future municipal improvements. Any action will be taken when the council reopens regular session.

The council will also:

  • Act on a resolution adopting the Washington County Hazard Mitigation Action Plan.
  • Consider the renewal of the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement with Microsoft Corporation.

The council will meet tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m., at City Hall.

  1. Even though I don’t use any I thing just put up signs to ‘Respect others if you chose to use. You want people to come to Brenham to play sports, shop & spend the night then run them off with stupid petty rules you won’t ever enforce anyway. Half of the city employees use some sort of tobacco when the bosses some bosses included aren’t around witch is against city policy I believe.
