BRENHAM SUPERINTENDENT “GRATEFUL” FOR PASSING OF SCHOOL FINANCE BILL

Legislation that will provide $6.5 billion more for Texas classrooms, along with $5 billion in property tax relief, has been signed into law.

House Bill 3 was signed Tuesday by Governor Greg Abbott, who said the law “transforms” education and property tax in the state of Texas. The law calls for a $4.5 billion increase in spending on classrooms, and $2 billion more for teacher pay raises.

Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson said he is thankful that legislators kept their promise to reward teachers for the work they do for students.

Much of the school funding provides for economically disadvantaged students. This includes funding for free full-day prekindergarten classes, which the Brenham school district decided to fund several years ago.

Jackson said he and the district were always “optimistic” about this legislative session.

With the law, the state’s share of education funding will increase from 38 to 45 percent, and base per-student funding will jump from $5,140 to $6,160. Funding will also increase for low-income students, students with dyslexia, and for dual language programs for students who did not grow up with English as their primary language.

In addition, average compensation packages for full-time teachers, librarians, counselors and nurses with more than five years of experience will increase by around $4,200.

  1. I am wondering about the paraprofessional’s also. It’s seems it’s only fair that we get a raise also, have been a paraprofessional for 20 years plus. Every position is important!

  2. This is great news for all of the teachers who are under payed for what they give these young individuals, even though I’m sure this is nowhere near enough! What I would like to know is will the ISD tax rate be lowered due to this increased state funding? I doubt it!
