WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS APPROVE ROOF REPLACEMENTS FOR COURTHOUSE, ANNEXES

The Washington County Courthouse will soon be getting a bit of a facelift.

Washington County Commissioners at their meeting today (Tuesday) approved a contract with DK Haney Roofing, Inc. to replace the roof of the courthouse, along with the courthouse annex and probation annex.

Bobby Branham of Washington County Maintenance said the old roofs will be completely replaced, after having suffered storm damage. He said insurance will cover replacement of the courthouse roof for $177,755, the annex roof for $73,788, and the probation annex for $26,140.  He said to date, the county has received $150,000 to make the repairs, with $88,000 in depreciation that the county will recover once repairs are complete.

Branham said work on the roofs should begin in August, and take about a month to complete. He added that a crane will be onsite for part of the job, and proposed removing the out-of-service radio tower from the roof.  He said he has talked with Commissioner Don Koester about putting a 66 foot flagpole in its place, which would not only be able to fly a 12x18 flag, but allow for more Christmas lights.

Commissioners also heard a series of monthly reports. During Sheriff Otto Hanak’s monthly report, he commended staff for the work they do improving and maintaining conditions at the Washington County Jail, which is around 30 years old.  He mentioned that sheriff’s deputies were involved in a motorcycle chase early this (Tuesday) morning around Salem Road and FM 109, but had to call off the search as they were unable to keep up.  He said no one was hurt in the incident.

During Veteran Service Officer Eric Posern’s report, he mentioned his office hours at the courthouse annex would be changing starting August 12th.  His new hours will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, after previously being 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Wednesday.
