NO SUSPECTS IN GRAFFITI-SPRAYING OF STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATUE IN BELLVILLE; STATUE CLEANED BY LOCAL STUDENTS

Information is slim in the case of the Stephen F. Austin statue in Bellville that police say was vandalized over the weekend.

Bellville Police Lieutenant Jason Smalley said sometime Sunday in the late night hours, someone sprayed graffiti with the term “F Racism” onto the front of the statue.

Smalley said this may be a case that goes unsolved, as there is no camera by the statue that would be able to pick out a suspect at the site.  He said it would take word of mouth at this point to get someone turned in.

Smalley said the act no doubt stems from last week’s death of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes while he was handcuffed face down in the street.  However, when looking at the phrasing used on the statue, he does not believe it is connected to any particular social group or human rights movement, such as Black Lives Matter.

The graffiti was cleaned off of the statue by Bellville High School senior Alex Rodgers and Faith Academy of Bellville junior Dusty Rodgers.

Smalley said a close patrol has been assigned to watch the statue.

  3. These folks spray painting irate ignorant ig Texas history.

    Yes, Austin owned slaves at times.

    That said he was against it theoretically as it was against Liberty. That said, he saw the economic side as well (mind you economics of then not now, and my argument is based on views then from historical point of view).

    He even attempted to end it, but it failed.

    Even then he knew it was wrong and would destroy the US.

    It’s sad that folks are blind to history in the name of hate.

    Too much hate both sides.

    And for the record: I’m sad Bellville didn’t put a camera up there regardless: the Olmec design is a climbing temptation and therefore safety hazard.
