EARLY VOTING BEGINS FOR LEE, WALLER CO. SHERIFF RUNOFF ELECTIONS

With the beginning of early voting for the Republican and Democratic Primary Runoffs comes the start of voting for a pair of area Sheriff’s races.

Starting today (Monday) and running through July 10th, early voters in Lee and Waller County will step to the polls to decide on the Sheriff’s races in those counties.  Election Day was initially set for May 26th, but is now set for July 14th after concerns about COVID-19.

In Lee County, voters will choose between retired DPS Major Casey Goetz and Fayette County Sheriff’s Detective Garrett Durrenberger.  In March’s primary election, the two received 1,182 and 1,151 votes respectively, compared to the 592 received by fellow challenger and Lee County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy James Crockett.

Whoever wins the Republican primary runoff will not have opposition in November, and will replace current Sheriff Rodney Meyer, who is not running for re-election after taking office in January 2009.

In Waller County, the winner of July’s runoff will secure the Republican nomination for the final race in November against Democrat Cedric D. Watson, who previously ran and lost to current Republican Sheriff R. Glenn Smith in 2016.

Smith received 2,117 votes in March’s primary election, compared to challenger Troy Guidry, a trainer and instructor for the K9 and Mounted Patrol Divisions of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, who received 2,235 votes.  Meanwhile, Dan Porter, a reserve at the Waller County Precinct Four Constable’s Office, received 657 votes.
