STATUS UNKNOWN FOR SENIOR CENTER COMMUNITY WIDE FOOD BOX DISTRIBUTION SEPTEMBER 30TH

The status of the upcoming USDA Farmers to Families Curbside Food Box program at the Margaret E Blizzard Senior Activity Center in Brenham is up in the air.

The next community-wide food box program is currently scheduled for Wednesday, September 30th.  However, according to Horace Hodge, a liaison for the Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement with the USDA, the details of the distribution are still being worked out at this point.

Hodge said a request for the food boxes has been submitted, but the USDA has not gotten confirmation from food distributors on the food box deliveries.

Toy Kurtz, Executive Director of the Washington County Healthy Living Association (WCHLA), said the organization has worked with DiMare Fresh, a food supplier out of Houston, to get the food box deliveries.  She states the company has not responded to her inquiries about the situation.

Kurtz said this leaves the WCHLA to “just hope” the food boxes show up for the curbside pickup, stating boxes never arrived for those who came to the pickup on September 2nd.  She said the WCHLA “cannot operate that way.”

Kurtz apologized to all those affected, saying, “It’s out of our hands.”  She noted that the USDA program does not affect WCHLA seniors, and that senior home delivery on Mondays and senior curbside on Tuesdays will continue as normal.
