BRENHAM’S AIRPORT ADVISORY BOARD RECEIVES UPDATES

Brenham’s Airport Advisory Board received updates on several projects during their meeting Tuesday evening.  Stephanie Doland, Director of Development Services, updated the board about the ongoing hump/bump repair on the runway. She said the project is taking much longer than originally planned after a section of the fill dirt failed a proof roll test before paving.  The section was tested if groundwater was causing the problem, but that was negative.  The recent rains have only compounded the problem.  The contractor on the project has started removing the fill dirt to allow it to dry out and the project is moving forward with a completion date of November 5, although Doland said that date may need to be pushed back.  The airport has been operating with a shortened runway while the project is going on.

The board also receive a brief update on the FBO situation at the airport.  Southern Flyer closed its doors September 1st after owners Jack and Janet Hess decided to not renew their contract with the city.  Aviators Plus, operated by Brent Nedbalek, is now the sole FBO at the airport.  Nedbalek said his company is looking at taking over the old Southern Flyer location, depending on what the city is going to ask for the building.  Nedbalek said his company is also interested in operating the restaurant at the airport, but again is waiting to see what the city will be requiring.

The Airport Advisory Board will be short several members at the end of the year as 6 members terms expire.  Kim Hodde with the City of Brenham said the City Council may reduce the board from the current 9 members to 7 to make it more manageable. Anyone wishing to serve on the board is asked to fill out an application with the City of Brenham.
