At a gathering Wednesday at the Barnhill Center, local leaders and stakeholders were briefed on proposed updates to the historic building.  Upchurch Architects, the team overseeing construction, has designed new lighting, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, drainage and other infrastructure to bring updated reliability and compliance to the century-old landmark.

Elizabeth Price of Upchurch Architects gave the presentation, along with Alan Krathaus of Core Designs and Texas historian and filmmaker Mike Vance.

The main floor will house multimedia exhibits to present the diverse history of the region.  This will include a central rotunda structure that showcases the people of Washington County on the outer shell, while the inside will offer a view of downtown Brenham through the decades, using highly interactive video elements.

Spread across the main floor of the museum will be multi-sided kiosks that include video touch screens, backlit text panels and artifact vitrines.  A small theatre is part of the plan.  Other special areas will highlight the county’s military veterans and the building’s history as a post office, with a detailed timeline encircling it all.

Vance, who also serves as the museum’s content coordinator, said the goal is to “create the best regional history museum in Texas.”

Content for the museum continues to be developed, and the physical exhibits will be built over the coming year.  The museum is also looking for community engagement, including gathering old photographs from around the county and taking oral histories.
