A Grimes County man is in custody after a chase Wednesday afternoon that involved multiple law enforcement agencies.

James Edward Byrne
(Grimes Co. Jail)

Grimes County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to make a traffic stop south of Todd Mission on a vehicle driven by 48-year-old James Edward Byrne of Bedias, who was the subject of an investigation.  According to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office, Byrne failed to yield to deputies and led them on a pursuit that went into Waller County.

Byrne reportedly shot multiple times at the pursuing deputy, who at one point returned fire.

The pursuit was later joined by deputies with the Waller County Sheriff’s Office and DPS Troopers.  The chase ended in a private subdivision off FM 1736 in Waller County, where Byrne was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.  A rifle was later found within his vehicle.

Byrne was booked into the Grimes County Jail for Evading Arrest/Detention in a Vehicle and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.  Additional charges will be pursued against Byrne, who is being held without bond.

The Grimes County deputy that was shot at was not injured, and Byrne was also not struck.

Investigation is ongoing, and no further details will be released.
