BURTON CITY COUNCIL DECLARES UNCONTESTED ELECTION

The Burton City Council moved to cancel its election this spring after declaring an uncontested race at its meeting Tuesday.

The council approved an ordinance certifying that the candidates for the May 1st election – Mayor David Zajicek and councilmembers Nathan Kalkhake, Paul McLaughlin and Macey Tidwell – are unopposed.

The four will be sworn into office on May 11th.

Also on Tuesday, the council approved changing over to ZochNet to provide Burton City Hall’s phone and fax line services.  The city will pay $750 upfront for new phone lines and a fax line, with a monthly plan of $97 for local and long-distance calling.  The city will now have three wired phones, one wireless phone and one fax line.

The city’s previous phone plan amounted to around $230 per month, not including extra charges for long-distance calls.

The city currently gets free internet through ZochNet.

The council also:

  • Tabled an ordinance amending the city’s current manufacture home ordinance. The item was also tabled at the council’s meeting in February.  A workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 23rd for the council to further discuss the matter.
  • Approved an ordinance establishing the budget for the 2021-22 Fiscal Year.
  • Approved the MS150 bike event to come through town on May 1st.
  • Gave banking authority to City Secretary Adrian Cepeda to make deposits, accept bank bags and statements, cash petty cash checks and transfer funds between City of Burton accounts.
  • Approved contracting the municipal judge as specified for the city’s municipal needs. The city will contract the current municipal judge with a reduced schedule of one to two days per month.

  1. Who pays for long distance anymore? Faxes are not needed either. Scan and send via email and save a little money.
