BRENHAM, BURTON ISDs PLANNING TO STAY COURSE FOLLOWING NEW CDC GUIDANCE
Following recent changes to federal COVID-19 health guidance, Brenham and Burton ISDs say they plan to maintain their current guidelines.
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced new safety recommendations for K-12 schools, including allowing students who are wearing masks to sit three feet apart in the classroom rather than six feet.
Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin said the district does not plan to alter its COVID-19 protocols at this time. He said when the district’s COVID-19 Response Team meets again, it will look at the new guidance and see if any adjustments are appropriate.
Burton ISD Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy said no changes have been made to the district’s procedures, and she expects the district will maintain its current methods for the rest of the school year.
Other new CDC guidance removes recommendations for plastic shields and other physical barriers between desks; directs elementary schools to provide at least three feet of space between desks regardless of community spread level, as long as other precautions are taken; and advises middle and high schools to provide three feet of space between desks unless there is high community spread, in which case there should be six feet. Six feet distance is still recommended for other activities like sporting events, meals, and other gatherings or assemblies.
