TxDOT: TEMPORARY SIGNALS AT HIGHWAY 290-FM 1155 INTERSECTION EXPECTED BY END OF WEEK

TxDOT officials say a temporary fix for the traffic signal at Highway 290 and FM 1155 in Chappell Hill should arrive soon.

The signal at the intersection was damaged during a six-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler Friday afternoon.  TxDOT says the crash caused “significant damage” to the signal pole and concrete foundations.

Bob Colwell, Public Information Officer for TxDOT’s Bryan District, says while it may take two to three weeks to replace the signal pole and mast arms, officials are working to place temporary signals that will reopen the intersection to left turns.  He expects those will be in place by the end of the week.

Colwell says TxDOT is aware of public concerns regarding the safety of the intersection.

Colwell also says TxDOT understands there is a greater sense of urgency to put in the temporary signals quickly, as thousands are expected to come to Chappell Hill this weekend for the annual Bluebonnet Festival.

Colwell says it is too early to say whether improvements to the intersection would be made on their own or as part of a larger project, like the proposed widening of Highway 290 from Chappell Hill to Hempstead.

At this time, TxDOT is unsure of what the cost will be to fix the signal.

Drivers should continue to use caution and expect delays until repairs at the intersection are complete.
