A DPS report indicates the accident occurred shortly before 9:45 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 290 at Round Top Road, less than two miles east of Ledbetter.

According to DPS, a 2018 Peterbilt truck towing a semi-trailer was attempting to make a left turnaround and head east on the highway.

The report says a 2016 Hyundai Sonata traveling behind the truck drove into the left turn lane after passing another vehicle and did not slow down, striking the back of the trailer.  The collision caused the Hyundai to catch on fire.

24-year-old Kyla Justine Hooper was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver, 63-year-old Kindred Lawrence Raven of Elmendorf, was not injured.

Responding to the scene were DPS, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette and Lee County EMS and the Carmine and Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Departments.

  1. This girl came through the foster care system and landed in a dream family that she just completed in only a way God could orchestrate. Her parents and sister are so very broken. Rest in Jesus, Kyla.

  2. This is so heartbreaking ? Rest Kyla ? she was such a sweet person ? Prayers to your family….
