FOUR INDUCTED TO THE FOOTBALL HALL OF HONOR

Three former outstanding Brenham Cub football players and a former football coach were enshrined in the Brenham High School Football Hall of Honor at a luncheon today (Friday).

Trason Maresh, Erich Habermehl and Ryan Roberson were enshrined in the hall of honor, along with former Brenham coach Tim Oehrlein, at the Blinn College Student Center.

Also recognized this year were former Brenham High athletic trainer Bob Purl, who passed away in July and 2015 Hall of Honor Inductee and radio announcer Ed Pothul who passed away this week. Coach Tim Oehrlein shared a special memory of Ed and his kids with those attending:

Tim Oehrlein is best known by Brenham fans as former longtime head coach Glen West’s offensive guru, serving as the Cubs’ offensive coordinator under West for 18 seasons (1998-2016). Brenham posted a record of 179-57 under West and Oehrlein. After stints at Lewisville High School and Memorial, Oehrlein joined West’s staff at Kemp High School. In 1998 the two moved to Brenham, and were joined by another Brownwood teammate, Craig Agnew. The trio helped lead the Cubs to the UIL State finals three times — the last in 2013. It remains the Cubs’ only three appearance in the championship game.

Trason Maresh was a 1993 graduate of Brenham High, and earned four letters with the Cubs playing on the offensive line. He earned all-district, all-state, and all-American accolades in football and was selected his senior year to be a player in the Texas All Star game in Fort Worth. Tragically, Trason passed away in 2010.

Erich Habermehl emerged as an athlete at an early age playing soccer, then graduating to baseball, basketball and eventually football in the 8th grade. During his senior year, Habermehl was named captain of the football team and played quarterback for the Brenham Cubs. He was named to the 1991 Associated Press Sports Editors' Class 4A Team as an honorable mention after completing 80 of 169 passes for 1,238 yards and a then school record 18 touchdowns.

Ryan Roberson was a three-year football letterman for the Cubs where he contributed any way he could as a two-way starter helping Brenham post a 33-6 record (19-0 district) and win three consecutive district championships. He was ranked the nation's second-best fullback by Rivals and tabbed one of the state's top 10 linebackers by Dave Campbell's Texas Football his senior year. He rushed for 1,318 yards and 26 touchdowns on 268 carries during his three years of varsity play.
