BURTON FOOTBALL FORCED TO FORFEIT SEVEN WINS

BURTON PLAYOFF FUTURE NOW IN DOUBT

According to a report from Matt Stepp with Dave Campbell's Texas Football and the Bryan College Station Eagle, The Burton Panther Football team is having to forfeit seven wins this season due to the use of an ineligible player. The District 13-2A Division II district executive committee made the ruling last week. Burton was leading the district and had clinched a playoff spot before the forfeitures. Burton (1-8, 1-4) will now need to beat Iola (2-6, 2-3) and have Snook (4-5, 3-2) beat Milano (4-5, 2-3) this Friday to qualify for the playoffs. KWHI is working to gather more details on this story.

  1. Grainger was outplayed and deserved to lose that game plain and simple. I couldn’t believe the Grainger coach acted so childish. Not a good example for the student players.

Burton got punished for the wrong doing and recovered from it. That is the way is goes.

  2. Here’s my concern too: will UIL expand it to a school wide punishment, as they did Katy over the forged progress report?

They ruled it was a school-wide issue in Katy.

If so, that means volleyball may be disqualified.

I hope this is an appeal, not penalty.

  3. Besides acknowleging the legitimate beef of the “disgruntled”, does anyone care for the boy who played by the rules, but had to ride the bench for three years, for the benefit of the coach and the fans?
Can’t anybody see that this “mistake”, whether sloppy or intentional has been the Panther Way for years: Win at all costs.
This district has much more to revitalize than rundown football stands.
It needs to re-examine what its mission is and how each person within this district approaches their duties.
They need to be trustworthy before entrusting them with $43M.

  4. Rules need to be changed that if a student lives on district with a relative or guardian it does not matter if the parent lives in another city. It’s not fair to the student if he is a bonifide full time student in district. I feel that if appealed, the decision could be reversed.

  5. So they can win only two games and still get in??? What kind of playoffs is this?? Playoffs? Playoffs?

    1. When you have two dominant teams (Burton and Granger) in a district full of schools that haven’t really been able to do much (Sommerville, Snook, Iola, Bartlett, Milano) two wins can get into the playoffs. It’s dishonorable that Granger chose to go this route. They played a good game against Burton and lost, but instead of taking the loss they did this. It’s honestly sad, I coached peewee football in Lexington for years and always looked forward to playing Granger. They were well coached and played well. Win or lose, we met in the middle of the field after the game, took and knee, and thanked God together for the chance to play the game and that everyone was healthy at the end of it. It is very sad to see that spirit is not what drives Granger now.

      1. Did you actually see the Granger / Burton game. It was a game of two evenly matched teams! The game was one of the worst officiated games I have ever seen. Instead of letting the two teams decide by competition who was the better team ..the game was taken over by the officials with many incorrect calls/no calls by the officialS! Against both teams.. So many that the teams could hardly compete. It was a game that the UIL should have reviewed..and probably did. That could be where the ineligible player might have come to light. Who knows?? Maybe conclusions were jumped to..to quickly!
Are you privy to ALL the facts? Be careful characterizing Granger unless you are privy to ALL the facts! Adhering to ESTABLISHED rules should not constitue a bad taste in one’s mouth! By the way I do not live in Granger!

        1. I agree and I regret repeating unsubstantiated rumors. My apologies. I did see the game, by the way.

        2. You must also have witnessed the poor sportsmanship of the Granger coaching staff. That alone is enough to let you know what kind of team they are.

          1. This is exactly why things get convoluted! I did not always buy into the actions of either coaching staff! But..the way the game was officiated I can see reason for both coaching staff’s frustration. Fingers could be pointed to each sideline for frustrated actions! The teams on the field should have been the one’s to decide who was the best team and the outcome of the game… not the officiating crew. That doesn’t make either school bad sportsmen. Making unfounded accusations against either team doesn’t solve anything…only increases frustrations. The old saying ..”pointing a finger at one means the thumb is pointing back at the one pointing!!”

  6. Put Burton up there along with the SMU teams of the 80’s and the Houston Astro team that was stealing signs. Wow! They should be disqualified for good for bringing in ringers.

    1. You know the situation, sir. Nor is your statement necessary or factual. Spread your hate elsewhere.

  7. “Dr. Kennedy says she is a firm believer that athletics are an extension of what students learn in the classroom.” That statement comes from the KWHI story about the bond issue and the district’s needs. Having been a classroom teacher for over two decades and a sponsor of numerous UIL events and contestants, it is the responsibility of the sponsor (or in this case the coach) to ensure that all contestants/players are eligible. Regardless of the fact that some people may see this as ‘petty’, or the work of a disgruntled opponent, the fact still remains that honesty is honesty and no one will ever be faulted for being honest, only penalized if dishonesty is later discovered. This should be a learning experience for everyone involved, from those that failed to thoroughly check the enrollment papers, to the teammates who played and who now see their victories forfeited. If this turns out to be self-reported, then that reveals honesty and truthfulness on the school’s part, and all concerned should learn from that. If it turns out otherwise, then those who should have been diligent have questions to ask themselves, and possibly answers to give others.

    1. As I said, I understand that rules are rules… and so the children suffer for the failures of the the adults. I’ll be interested to see the outcome of the UIL committee meeting.

  8. Such a petty thing. This kid has been going to Burton for three years. He lives in Burton, but his mother lives in Brenham, and from my understanding, this is the address he used for registration. I understand that “rules is rules”. I figure this is the work of some disgruntled parent or coach from a defeated team. How heartless to punish these kids that have worked so hard. Every victory was won fairly and decisively. What kind of person would do that to these kids?

    1. Obviously it wasn’t fair if they were bringing in kids from other districts. The teams that work hard and PLAY FAIR in their district are the ones that are punished! It would be heartless to allow many others to get messed over just so your team can advance by breaking the rules. Finally got caught!

      1. Bold of you to assume this kidc was recruited and didn’t live in Burton. In nonperfect worlds not all families are cookie cuter scenarios. Some cases kids don’t live with a biological parent for important reasons. Also, in case you missed the last game. Said kid was not on the field and the team still won by 40 points.

        1. In a district where 2 wins can get you into the playoffs, I’m not sure bragging about beating someone by 40 means anything.

    2. Don’t think this has anything to do with his address and more to do with checking out of a school and back in again. It is a shame the Grainger coach was such a sore loser! That was an amazing game and Burton deserves that win, they deserve all the wins. Punishing the team is not the appropriate way to handle this situation, the school and the adults involved should be held solely accountable. IMO
