The Bellville Lions Club has named this year’s recipient of its Citizen of the Year Award.
Bellville Police Chief Jason Smalley received the honor during the club’s annual Christmas party last week at Concordia Hall.
Smalley, a 1992 graduate of Bellville High School, has been with the Bellville Police Department since 2005, after previously working with Harris County and the Austin County Sheriff’s Office. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2008, and became the new police chief after the retirement of Larry Matthews on March 31st.
Lions Club President Kyle Freitag presented the award and read several nomination forms that offered praise for Smalley. Some of the nomination comments described Smalley as “an excellent representative of what a community leader should be and stand for,” and “a person of great integrity” who “goes the extra mile in everything he does.”
