WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS SEEKING GRANT FOR TIRE CLEANUP EVENT

Washington County Commissioners approved the submission of a grant application for a local tire cleanup event this fall at their meeting today (Tuesday).

The county is applying for a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) solid waste grant through the Brazos Valley Council of Governments (BVCOG), in collaboration with Brannon Industrial Group (BIG).  The grant, if accepted, would be for $7,091 and would cover the costs for tire recycling and radio and newspaper advertising.

Environmental Health Director Mark Marzahn said Washington County residents are typically very supportive of the event.

The event would be hosted at the BVR Collection Station and would be open to all Brenham, Burton and Washington County citizens.   It would be limited to collection of residential tires 22 inches or less and off the rim only.  Marzahn said the limit on types and sizes of tires is due to increased cost for tires that cannot be recycled, such as larger tires, tires full of dirt and off-road or farm equipment tires.  Because of this, he is estimating a lower amount of tires collected at 19 tons.

The county would contract with Liberty Tire Recycling at a rate of $275 per ton, coming to an estimated expense of $5,225 for 19 tons.  BIG would haul the tires to Liberty Tire Recycling for $800 per trip; Marzahn is estimating three trips will be necessary, and said the transport fee would be paid not with the grant, but from the environmental health department’s current cleanup budget.

Commissioner Joy Fuchs said residents look forward to the event every year.  County Judge John Durrenberger said any effort to reduce illegal dumping of tires is “well worth it.”

Also at today’s meeting, commissioners approved:

  • An amending plat of tracts 1 and 2 of the Chappell Ridge subdivision fronting Chappell Ridge Lane in Precinct 2.
  • A formal notice from Chappell Hill Water Supply – PGMS for a one-inch water service line with a trench to repair a leak under Mulberry Street in Precinct 2.
