RUTH J. SIMMONS TO STEP DOWN AS PVAMU PRESIDENT
The president of Prairie View A&M University has announced her intent to step down.

Ruth J. Simmons has served as president of the university since July 2017, after the departure of former president George Wright. She was the first female president in the school’s history.
In a message to the school on Friday, Simmons said it is evident to her that “a new leader must assume responsibility for advancing the University to a new level of excellence in student outcomes, faculty achievement and research output.”
Simmons said while she will no longer serve as president, her work for Prairie View A&M University “will not cease.”
Simmons said she has informed Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp of her plans, and if he wishes, will remain in place until he names a successor.
