BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL HOSTING PUBLIC HEARING ON REDISTRICTING THURSDAY

The Brenham City Council will offer citizens an opportunity today (Thursday) to give feedback on the city’s redistricting plans.

The council will host a public hearing on its draft redistricting proposal before possibly adopting a final plan.

The public hearing invites feedback on the draft plan formed after the council discussed the matter during a special meeting on May 5th.  Two drafts were shown at the meeting, but a third was created to attempt to align the city’s wards with Washington County precinct lines.

Data from the recent U.S. Census shows that Councilmember Albert Wright’s Ward 2 is currently underpopulated, while Councilmember Atwood Kenjura’s Ward 3 is overpopulated.  The redistricting proposal seeks to address this by moving homes and part of downtown from Ward 1, represented by Shannan Canales, to Ward 2, and shifting homes from Ward 3 to Ward 4, covered by Adonna Saunders.

If the changes to the wards are approved, they will take effect on January 1, 2023, in time for the May 2023 general election.

In other action today, the council will potentially proceed with rebuilding a fuel farm at the Brenham Municipal Airport.  Councilmembers will consider a service agreement with Bassco Services, Inc. for $232,012 for the design, construction and installation for the rebuild of the former Marathon Oil fuel farm and associated equipment from Alberth Aviation.  The fuel farm and equipment was purchased and relocated to the Brenham airport on March 15th, and includes two 12,000 gallon fuel tanks.

The council will also consider:

  • Accepting a $35,000 donation from the Fortnightly Club for the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library.
  • Appointing members to the city’s Airport Master Plan Committee.

The council will meet at 1 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
