BRENHAM PARKS AND REC BOARD HEARS UPDATE ON COMPREHENSIVE PLAN, PROJECTS

The Brenham Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met today (Wednesday) to review the various park projects included as part of the city’s comprehensive plan.

Board members received an update on the priorities of the plan, which was implemented in September 2019, and projects that are underway or have been completed since its adoption.

Community Services Specialist Crystal Locke said the intent of the plan is to contribute positively to the livability of Brenham, and feels parks are essential to accomplishing that.

One of the plan’s key objectives is a continued provision of high-quality park space and recreational programming.  Some examples Locke pointed to for how the city is accomplishing this include completion of the Henderson Park splash pad, crossover nature trail at Hohlt Park, StoryWalk trail at Fireman’s Park, bocce court at Jackson Street Park and Little Free Libraries.

The plan also seeks to emphasize the city’s natural, historical, recreational and cultural assets in marketing and economic development efforts.  Locke said sports tourism at local parks, the painting of a mural paying homage to the historic Camptown community at Jerry Wilson Park, the Flying Horses Carousel and Henderson Park’s recent designation as a Lone Star Legacy Park all contribute to the plan’s goal.

In addition, the plan incorporates a focus on pedestrian and bicyclist access and safety within the city.  Locke said the bike and pedestrian routes map adopted in February as part of the city’s thoroughfare plan will be used as a resource in future discussions on connecting parks and sites to make them more bike- and pedestrian-friendly.
