WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS TO CONSIDER INCREASING PAY FOR ELECTION WORKERS

A proposal to increase the pay for Washington County election personnel will be brought before Washington County Commissioners tomorrow (Tuesday).

The court will consider bringing up the hourly pay for election judges and alternate judges from $9 to $13 and election clerks from $9 to $11.  The pay raises would take effect immediately.

The pay rate was last increased in 2017, when the pay was $8 per hour.  A temporary rate of $10 per hour was put in place for the May 7th joint election with Brenham ISD.

County elections staff say the increased pay should encourage those serving during elections to continue doing so and incentivize others to consider working elections.

People who work at elections include the judges and alternates, clerks, the early voting ballot board, central counting station, tabulators and the luggage crew.

With the pay raises, the early voting ballot board judge and alternate judge would receive the same pay as the election day and central count judge and alternate judge.  The luggage crew consists of volunteers who have chosen not to receive any pay; however, if this should change, future hires will receive the same as an election clerk.

Another election item to come before commissioners will be a joint agreement between the county and Brenham ISD for the school district bond election on November 8th.

The court will also hold a public hearing and vote on the county clerk’s records archive plan for Fiscal Year 2023, concerning the preservation and restoration of archived records.

In other action, commissioners will consider:

  • Approval of the 2023 sheriff’s and constable’s fees for Washington County.
  • Submission of COVID-19 hazard mitigation grant applications for generators for the Washington County Expo office building and EMS Station No. 3 and agreeing to pay the required matching funds.
  • Amending the original contract between the county and Teresa Sazedj for human resources consultation services not to exceed $9,000.
  • Discussion of a formal notice from Magnolia Oil & Gas Operating, LLC for a 12-inch lay flat rubber water transfer line on Longpoint Road, Rehburg Road and Old Landua Road for a four-month timeline duration in Precinct 3.
  • A bond renewal for reserve deputy sheriff Carl Wiesepape with the sheriff’s office.
  • A proclamation declaring September 2022 as the period for the Washington County READ.

Commissioners will meet tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Washington County Courthouse.
