PROPERTY TAX BILLS OUT FOR WASHINGTON CO. HOMEOWNERS

Washington County property owners are receiving their tax bills in the mail, and most of them can expect to pay more in taxes.

While large increases in property values pushed down the tax rates of most of the eight taxing districts in Washington County, a majority of property owners will still end up with a larger bill.

Chief Appraiser Dyann White says as the 2023 inspection cycle begins, she is keeping a close eye on what happens with values next year, as they are more subject to change than what the appraisal district is used to.

The average homestead in the City of Brenham increased in value to $215,590 this year from $192,407 last year.  The city’s tax rate fell to $0.4737 per $100 valuation, but taxes on the average home will still increase by $5.90 per month.

Burton’s average homestead was valued at $200,266 this year, up from $182,645 a year ago.  The average home will pay $11 less per month in taxes, as the city reduced its tax rate to $0.32131 per $100.

The average Washington County homestead was valued at $243,552 this year, compared to $216,535 last year.  With a reduced tax rate of $0.3860 per $100, that means the average homestead will pay $12.46 less per month in taxes.

Homes in Brenham ISD increased in average value from $219,235 to $246,747 this year.  While the tax rate went down to $0.9346 per $100, the typical homeowner will pay $11.60 more in monthly taxes.

Burton ISD’s average homestead went up to $224,089 from $200,430 last year.  The school district’s tax rate went up to $1.0546 per $100 on account of the bond, so the average home will see a monthly tax increase of $33.55.

The average homestead in the Blinn College District rose in value to $243,552 from $216,535 last year.  The College decreased its tax rate to $0.0377 per $100, leading to a decrease of $1.61 in taxes per month for the average home.

In the Pecan Glen Road District, average home values jumped from $361,071 to $408,255 this year.  With the road improvement bond raising the tax rate to $0.373879 per $100, the average Pecan Glen resident will pay $82.06 more per month in taxes.

For the Oak Hill Fresh Water District, the average homestead saw an increase to $348,939 from $315,283 a year ago.  While the tax rate of $0.3501 per $100 is lower than the previous year, the standard home will pay an additional $5.67 in taxes each month.

White says the large increase in taxable value was due to rising real estate sales prices, new construction, and new oil and gas production.  County-wide, new construction was valued at $155,694,340.  The county picked up 3,516 new oil and gas accounts, and the total oil and gas value exploded by 260 percent - from $259,147,709 to $933,015,809.

Taxes are due by January 31st.
