BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD HIRES ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

The Brenham School board hired a new Assistant Principal for Brenham Middle School at their meeting at noon Monday.  Ms. Karen Brown was approved by the board.  She comes to Brenham from Conroe ISD, where she has taught at the Junior High and Intermediate levels.  She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Sam Houston State and a Masters from Lamar University.  She will be replacing Ted Ferretti, who resigned at the end of the school year to explore options at other school districts.

In other action, the board approved a bid to install new carpet at the Community Education Building.  Trustee Kyle Hafner said he had some questions about the bid.  He said he appreciated that it was going to a local company, but the cost per square yard was too high.  The board ultimately approved the bid of $52,000 to Fischer Tile and Carpet Company.

The board also approved a bid for ballistic film to be applied to exterior windows for $52,000 to be paid by grant funds.  The TEA is requiring all school districts to apply the film before the next school year.  The board also approved several budget amendments to move already approved funds around inside the budget and approved new bank signatories.

After a break for the noon meal, the board went into an hour-long budget workshop.  The Chief Financial Officer, Thad Lasater explained the history of the Districts School Financing.  He documented how the state has steadily decreased their funding each year and how the local tax payer has had to pick up the difference.  Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin said the funding has to come from somewhere:

The board then went into Executive Session to talk with their attorney about personnel matters.  Their next board meeting is scheduled for June 20th at 6:00 PM at Brenham High School.

  1. “the funding has to come from somewhere” with that statement he means us, the taxpayer. When are we ever going to hear of a taxing authority talk about cutting back, eliminating some of the central office bloat, cutting back on unneeded expenses, and streamlining operations? The school district keeps getting more and more expensive every year and there appears to be no attempt to reduce costs. We get the cry of taking care of the kids, but that is hard to do when we cannot afford our taxes.
