CUBS OUTDUEL VIKINGS 31-24 IN NON-DISTRICT BATTLE

The Brenham Cub Football Team picked up a hard fought victory over the Bryan Vikings last (Friday) night at Merrill Green Stadium.

The Vikings took the opening drive down the field and scored on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Kason Byrd to Tyson Turner to make it 7-0 with 9:28 left to go in the first quarter.

Brenham would respond on their first drive as well. Freshman Jakoby Dixon scored on a six-yard run to tie it 7-7 at the 5:47 mark.

Bryan got another score on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Byrd to Terrence Lewis. That made it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cubs tied it up a second time on a two-yard touchdown run by Senior Jaylon Ward to make it 14-14 with 11:01 in the second quarter.

Brenham would get on the scoreboard again on a 24-yard run by Dixon to put the Cubs in front for the first time 21-14 with one minute left in the first half.

The Vikings came back to tie it in the third quarter as Byrd found Lewis again on a 64-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-21.

The Cubs would take the lead for good in the fourth quarter on a 60-yard touchdown run by Ward with 11:15 left in the game to make it 28-21.

Ivan Salazar then nailed a 36-yard field goal to put Brenham ahead 31-21 at the 6:09 mark.

Bryan countered with their own field goal, a 20-yarder from Casey Bulhof to cut the Cub lead to 31-24 with 3:22 left in the game, but that would be the end of the scoring.

Dixon finished with 21 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Ward had nine carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Harvey was 9 for 14 passing for 132 yards. His leading receivers were Jose Castillo, who caught five passes for 53 yards, and Chris Guidry, who caught two passes for 71 yards.

Brenham went into victory formation, and after a couple of kneel downs, secured their second win of the season.

The Cubs now get to enjoy their bye week. Their next game is on Thursday, September 21, against New Braunfels at Cub Stadium at 7pm (6:30pm pregame on KWHI).
