ELDERLY MAN INJURED IN FAYETTE COUNTY

An elderly man was injured during a traffic crash involving a state trooper in Fayette County this past Friday.

DPS Trooper Josh Berger received a 9-1-1 call round 7:45am of a gray Toyota Prius driving east in the westbound lanes of Highway 71 between Bastrop and Smithville.

DPS troopers from Bastrop and Fayette Counties, sheriff’s deputies, and Smithville Police tried to stop the car, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The Prius was not traveling at a high rate of speed, so motorists were able to swerve around the vehicle to avoid it.

The chase finally ended in the community of West Point when the Prius struck Berger’s patrol vehicle.

According to Trooper Berger, the driver of the Prius was an elderly man from Giddings, who was experiencing a medical problem.

He was transported by Fayette County EMS to the Seton Smithville Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Berger was not injured.

The cause of the crash remains under a further investigation.
