BURTON CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES WASTE DISPOSAL NEEDS

The Burton City Council held talks on Tuesday about the city’s waste disposal services.

Councilmembers ran through a list of waste disposal criteria deemed important to both residential and commercial waste customers.  The item was only for discussion, so no action was taken.

Burton Mayor Karen Buck said as part of the work the city put into dealing with the buzzards in town late last year, it heard from its commercial customers regarding their need to secure dumpsters not only from the vultures, but also illegal dumpers.

Some of the criteria being considered by the council include truck cleanliness and maintenance; customer service in terms of timely pick-up or missed trash protocols; and communication with the city for holiday schedules, breakdowns or delays.

Other pieces being measured are, for residential customers, any limitations on the number of trash bags put out, if bins are provided to customers, recycling availability, and overall cost.  For commercial customers, the cost and size of the dumpsters are of importance, along with the ability to lock the dumpsters and what days they are serviced.

Buck said the council will look both at its current waste disposal provider, Texas Commercial Waste, and at other providers in the area to determine who can best meet the needs of residents and businesses.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council approved amended budgets for Fiscal Year 2023-24, reflecting actual income and expenses for the fiscal year’s third quarter.  It also agreed to close North Railroad Street from West Washington Street to the Post Office drop box on March 9th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Texas Ranger Day.
