The Brenham Bowling team competed in the Region VIII tournament last Sunday at Copperfield Lanes in Cypress coming up just a little short in their goal of advancing to the State tournament.

In the morning, the Cub Boys team and the Cubette Girls team took on some of the best competition in the Houston area.

The Brenham boys finished 5th and never could get any momentum on the day.  Brenham averaged only 145 in their 5 singles games, well below the averages the boys had in the Bluebonnet District matches.

The girls team fared much better.  After their five singles games, in which they averaged a 124, they sat in 3rd place, which would put them in the State tournament.

Then, in the first Baker game the Cubettes had their highest game of the year, a 178 to increase the distance between them and the 4th place team Seven Lakes.  A trip to the State tournament seemed imminent.  Over the next four games however Seven Lakes cut the deficit and after 10 of 13 games Brenham and Seven Lakes were tied for the last transfer spot.

In a pivotal 6th Baker game (11th of 13 overall) Seven Lakes passed Brenham and then rolled a 155 in the 7th Baker game to put Brenham away.  The Cubettes rebounded in the last game of the morning with a 120 to Seven Lakes 105, but it was too little too late.

It was a similar story in the Individual tournaments.  Brett Campbell, Mason Wolf, and Wyatt Janner were bowling for the boys, while Freshman Colleen Cole bowled for the girls.

While all three Cubs bowled well, it was not enough to quality for State.  Campbell finished 14th on the day, and Janner finished 11th.  Junior Mason Wolf had 902 pins over 5 games for a 180 average, well above his 162 District average, and only fell 42 pins below the cut line for State qualification.

For the girls, Colleen's individual story was much like the teams.  She came out of the gate hot bowling a 162 and sitting in 5th place, the last transfer spot to the State tournament.

Colleen's third game saw some uncharacteristic mental errors which cost her and she ended up with a 105.  She rebounded with a 174 in the 4th game which vaulted her up to 6th place, one spot out of State.  Colleen's 5th and final game was a respectable 130 but she remained in 6th place.

Of the 16 Cubs and Cubettes who earned qualification on the Regional squad, only Seniors Carlyn Mccoy and Phillip Diehl will not return.
