Four members of Washington County 4-H won the Senior Division of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Food Challenge Competition, which was sponsored by HEB.

The team, which is known as the “Central Chefs”, consists of Audrey Schmidt, Haylie Niemeyer, Magali Silva, and Madison Moran.

Washington County won with their dish called, “Buffay’s Butternut Tots.”

For the competition, each team is randomly assigned to a food category.  Then, based on the category assignment, the team is provided a secret key ingredient that must be included.

Next, the teams get forty minutes to create a dish using a selection of grocery store items provided.

The teams then present their original dishes to judges, where they are scored based on preparation, serving size, food safety concerns, and nutritional value.

When asked about what advice they would give to future competitors in the Food Challenge, Madison Moran said, “Find a good set of teammates that are equally, committed, but have different personality traits and skill sets to bring to the table.”

  1. Congratulations, Central Chefs! Outstanding presentation. That looks and sounds delicious! Now, if we could only know your recipe.
