BRENHAM MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT PARTICIPATES AT REGIONAL SPELLING BEE

A Brenham Middle School student competed this past weekend at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee.

Will Hefferly

Will Hefferly, a sixth grader and the son of Andrew and Abigail Hefferly, was among dozens of contestants at the spelling bee held on Saturday at Houston Community College’s Missouri City campus.

According to Will’s family, he exited in the first round on the word “refugium”.  The word is defined by Merriam-Webster as “an area of relatively unaltered climate that is inhabited by plants and animals during a period of continental climatic change (such as a glaciation) and remains as a center of relict forms from which a new dispersion and speciation may take place after climatic readjustment.”

Will was Washington County’s lone representative at the spelling bee, with 22 counties in total that were invited to participate.

The winner of the regional bee was Tomball ISD eighth grader Ishika Varipilli, whose winning word in the eighth round was “scrannel”, meaning “harsh or unmelodious”.  Tomball ISD says this is her third straight trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be held in May in Washington, D.C.
