EMERGENCY PREPARATION SUPPLIES SALES TAX HOLIDAY APRIL 27-29

Texas’ tax-free weekend for emergency preparation supplies is coming up April 27-29.

The sales tax holiday allows for tax-exempt purchases of certain supplies needed for emergencies like hurricanes, flash floods and wildfires.

Among the items that qualify as tax-free are household batteries, first aid kits, fuel containers, fire extinguishers and portable self-powered radios priced below $75; emergency ladders and hurricane shutters less than $300; and portable generators less than $3,000.

There is no limit on the number of qualifying items that can be purchased.

Items that are not eligible for the sales tax holiday include batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles; cleaning supplies like disinfectant and bleach wipes; toilet paper; camping stoves and camping supplies; extension ladders and stepladders; and tents.

Online purchases count delivery, shipping, handling and transportation charges as part of the sales price.

A complete list of emergency preparation supplies that can be purchased tax-free is available on the Texas Comptroller’s website.
