LOCAL SCHOOL CLOSURES, DELAYS FRIDAY DUE TO SEVERE STORMS

  

Several school districts around the area are delaying the start of classes or cancelling them outright on Friday after severe weather Thursday evening.

Brenham ISD says school will be delayed by one hour on Friday to ensure roadway visibility. Campuses will receive students starting at 8 a.m., and classes will begin at 9 a.m.

Burton ISD has cancelled classes for Friday. Interim Superintendent Rob Barnwell told KWHI that flooding has occurred at the high school and cafeteria, and several bus routes are blocked.

Bellville ISD will not have class on Friday, reporting extreme damage to some homes, trees blocking multiple roads, and numerous power outages.

Hempstead ISD and Waller ISD are also closing schools on Friday due to storm damage and power outages.

The weather has led to flooding in some areas and knocked-down trees.

Thousands of residents lost power Thursday night, according to the online outage maps of Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative and San Bernard Electric Cooperative.

The City of Brenham is reporting downed power lines, along with tree debris on roadways. Crews are working to get power restored. As of its notice at approximately 8:22 p.m. Thursday, the city says some areas may be out for up to 8 hours.

Drivers are asked to be cautious and to stay away from downed power lines.
