FAYETTE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HOLDS MENTAL HEALTH CLASS FOR OFFICERS

  

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office recently hosted a newly mandated course for Texas Peace Officers on Officer wellness and mental health.

A 2021 study showed Peace Officers have a 54% higher risk of dying by suicide than the general population.

Additionally, Peace Officers have an average life expectancy of 66 years, 10 years less than the general public, and on average live only another 5 years after retiring from law enforcement.

The course aims to teach Peace Officers about managing their physical, mental, emotional and social wellness/health, and to break down the stigma of mental health and seeking help in the law enforcement profession.

The Sheriff’s Office said they were very pleased to be able to provide this course with the help of funding from a Community Impact Grant awarded by the Fayette Community Foundation and The Red Door Fund for Mental Health.
